Microlight Flying applications close this week

A reminder to all Basic 2 and up cadets that applications for flying in the Term 1 holiday’s close this Thursday 6th April.

For all those wanting to attend, please complete the following:

Microlight Flying – Term 1 Holidays

Basic 2 and up cadets (those cadets who joined in 2022 or earlier) will have the amazing opportunity to have a one-on-one 30 min lesson in a microlight aircraft in Rangiora, subsidised by the Unit.

We have secured three days over the Term 1 holidays:

  • Wed 12 April
  • Mon 17 April
  • Fri 21 April

Each day is strictly limited to 20 cadets, and each cadet can only fly once over those three days.

For all those wanting to attend, please complete the following:

  • Complete the Google Form found here
  • Apply on CadetNet for the day you want to fly on
    • Once a day is filled, applications will be closed for that CadetNet event.
  • Pay on our Online Shop found here
  • Have a parent/caregiver complete and return the additional Aircraft Consent Form and Declaration Found here. Paper copies will also be distributed.

Closer to the time we will advise when in the day you are scheduled to fly.

Cadets new to the unit in 2023 will have their opportunity to fly on Recruit Camp.

St John National Youth Competition – Patients wanted!

St John Cadets have requested our support by being patients who will act in scenarios for their competitors for their National Competition.

This will be held at the YMCA Christchurch/Botanical Gardens on the Friday 14th April (during the school holidays).

This event is free and catering will be provided.

ANZAC Day 2023 – Tues 25th April

It is mandatory that all cadets attend at least one ANZAC Day Service. We expect to see most personnel at the main Dawn Service at Cathedral Square, while the others smaller events should be attended by those who live close to them. Please apply on CadetNet.

All cadets MUST have breakfast before arriving at a service.

Not sure how to pay for camp?

If you are new to the unit, and haven’t discovered our ‘shop’ yet, here’s how to make payment for camps and activities:

  1. Go to our website – 17squadronatc.com
  2. Select ‘Shop’ from the options.
  3. Add the item or activity you are wanting to pay for to your cart.
  4. Follow the prompts to make payment.

Payment must be made before you attend the activity.

Drone expertise needed!

Exciting news – the unit is looking to purchase our own drones for training purposes. Cadets & NCOs, we need your help to identify the best type of drone for our unit. If you have your own drone, or know a bit about drones, please email cucdr.17sqn@cadetforces.org.nz so we can arrange to get some ideas and feedback from you.

Unit Shooting Day – 18 March 2023

We are holding a shooting day at Aylesbury Range, Saturday 18 March, 9am-12noon. This is for Basic 2 cadets and up only. If you joined in 2023 you will get an opportunity to shoot on Recruit Camp.

Exercise Recruit Camp

Applications are open on CadetNet for Exercise Recruit Camp which will be held on 28th-30th April at West Melton Army Range. If you are a new recruit, this is the perfect opportunity for you to experience your first Unit Camp, get to know your fellow Cadets and participate in fun activities like shooting and teamwork tasks. Basic 2, Proficiency and Advanced Cadets – this camp is for you too! You will hopefully have the opportunity to go flying.
